What Are Doc Fees and Do They Impact Final Price?

February 28th, 2024 by

As reflected by the numerous J.D. Power awards it has won over the years, Hyundai is a trusted name in the auto market thanks to its forward-thinking approach to technology and features and its commitment to high-quality dealership service. At Hyundai of Auburn, we strive to maintain the company’s high standards and affordability with every customer we serve.

That involves being straightforward about dealership costs such as doc fees, which is a topic that many buyers are either uncertain or entirely unaware of. Here, we explain what doc fees are, discuss how they impact the final price of your vehicle purchase, and examine some of the other common fees that car dealerships charge.

What Are Doc Fees?

A doc fee is a surcharge folded into the final cost of a new or used vehicle when you buy it from a dealership. The term itself is short for “dealer document fee,” though the Alabama Department of Revenue uses the designation “dealer fee.” Its alternative names, “paperwork fee” and “processing fee,” may give you a clearer picture of its purpose, which is to cover the cost of the back-office labor associated with a vehicle purchase.

Most if not all dealerships charge doc fees because back-office labor can be extensive. For a given transaction, the staff may have to handle any or all of the following activities:

  • Verifying the trade-in value of your previous vehicle.
  • Assessing your trade-in vehicle for open recalls.
  • Registering your purchased vehicle.
  • Ensuring that you receive your license plate.

The above is by no means an exhaustive list, either, since leasing or financing your vehicle involves another set of documentation. What’s more, every document must be reviewed for accuracy, as even a single error can invalidate the paperwork, in which case the dealership has to commit further resources to corrections and reprocessing.

How Do Doc Fees Impact a Vehicle’s Final Price?

A doc fee is a surcharge, so it increases the final price of your vehicle purchase. It typically can range up to $1500 on top of the vehicle’s sticker price, but the total amount may vary between dealerships, and some states have higher average doc fees, especially those that don’t regulate the cost.

In Alabama, one of the many states that don’t regulate such vehicle costs, the average doc fee is $489, according to Car Edge. The doc fees in this state are also taxable at the automotive rate, so the total sales tax on your vehicle purchase will increase relative to the dealer’s surcharge.

Can You Negotiate a Doc Fee?

Doc fees aren’t generally negotiable, though some dealerships may be willing to haggle under certain circumstances. What is negotiable, however, is the sticker price. If you know to expect a doc fee on top of the ordinary sales value, you can try to knock off a couple hundred dollars to account for the added cost.

To improve your chances of getting a preferred price on your next vehicle, make sure to research the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the models you’re interested in, which would give you a solid reference point for your negotiation. Also, if you have a current vehicle you’re willing to part with, get an estimate of its trade-in value so you can ensure you’re getting a fair amount knocked off of your new purchase.

What Other Fees Might You Encounter When You Purchase a Car?

Doc fees aren’t the only surcharges that car dealerships use. There are three additional costs you can commonly expect when you purchase a vehicle from an Alabama dealership.

Sales Tax

Sales tax is a percentage of the overall vehicle purchase cost. In Alabama, in-state vehicle sales include a tax rate of 2%, which is among the lowest in the country. So, if you purchase a Hyundai SANTA FE for $30,000, you can expect to pay only $600 in state sales tax.

However, you may have to account for county and municipal taxes as well, which vary depending on your location. In Auburn, for example, the local tax rate for auto sales is 1.1%, which increases the total sales tax rate to 3.1% and the total sales tax amount to $930 on a $30,000 vehicle.

Destination Fee

The destination fee represents the cost required to transport a vehicle from the manufacturer to the dealership. The transport process, which may be logistically complex, is one of the costs of operating in auto sales, so the dealer passes on the cost to the customer to defray the expense. The cost may range from around $1,000 to $3,000, but the exact fee usually depends on the make and model of the vehicle in question.

Title and Registration Fees

A title demonstrates proof of vehicle ownership, while registration indicates a vehicle is approved for operation on the state’s public roads. In Alabama, vehicle owners have 20 days from the time of acquisition to title and register a purchased vehicle and 30 days from the date of entry for out-of-state transplants.

The Alabama title fee is a flat rate of $16.60 — $15 for the application with an additional $1.50 in commission. The registration fee ranges from $23 to $105 but ultimately depends on the type of vehicle you drive, with smaller passenger vehicles costing less than pickup trucks.
